Using Poop to Share the Gospel!?!

God call us to make disciples. Do you share the Gospel like you should? I know I don’t. Last year I prayed to share the Gospel to three different people this year. I haven’t—not even once. 😒So today I went to a special seminar during my weekly Bible Study Fellowship (BSF) on sharing the Gospel. There was no new information, but I knew I needed a refresher to motivate me.
The tenets of the workshop were the same as most Gospel Presentations. They defined the Gospel and summarized four main truths. (Although, I think Bill Bright’s Four Spiritual Laws may be a little better.)
What is the Gospel?

The Gospel is the good news is that Jesus saved us from our sin which eternally separates us from God , and through the power of Christ’s resurrection, He grants us not only eternal life but a transformed life through the power of the Holy Spirit.
Four Truths

Here are the four basic truths in the presentation I heard. I’m not going to go into the details now, but I think it’s also important that we understand that we are made in the image of God which was neglected in the presentation. See my post Why Did Jesus Die on the Cross: Three Essential Questions You Need to Help You Understand Jesus.
- The truth about God
- The truth about sin.
- The truth about Jesus Christ—who He is and what He has done.
- The truth about man’s reasonable response and God’s power to live a transformed life.

Strategies

They also offered us good strategies to help us such as pray, notice (look for opportunities), ask open-ended questions, prepare a mini-testimony, prepare a 30-second Gospel presentation, and memorize some key verses to help you. These are all good tips and worth reviewing!
What Does This Have to Do with Poop?

I was a middle school teacher for over a decade, and I’m now the mom of a preschooler. And what’s true of middle schoolers and preschoolers is true of all people. Poop causes an emotional response—whether it be funny or disgust. People understand poop. 💩And back when I shared the Gospel more readily, I found poop as a way to help people understand the concept of sin. Because we live in a nonjudgmental culture, most people don’t truly understand the significance of sin. If people can’t understand their own sin, then they can’t truly understand their need for Jesus. To quote Martin Luther, the great leader of the Protestant Reformation:
“The first duty of the Gospel preacher is to declare God’s Law and show the nature of sin….thus they will become humble and yearn for help.”
Another preacher John Bunyan, the author of Pilgrim’s Progress stated:
“The man who does not know the nature of the law cannot know the nature of sin. And he who does not know the nature of sin cannot know the nature of the Savior.”
The famous preacher John Wesley said:
“Before I can preach love, mercy, and grace, I must preach sin, Law, and judgment. Preach 90% Law and 10% grace.”
My 30-Second Gospel Presentation Using Poop

Imagine the best food you ever had. If I offered it to you right now prepared by some of the best chefs in the world, would you eat it? What happens if I said that this meal was perfect except that it has a tiny bit of poop in it. But don’t worry, it’s just a small amount—less that 1% of the total meal. Would you eat it?
The perfect meal is like God. God is holy! He is perfect. He is pure. God created us that way too. Unfortunately, our sin contaminated us, and now we are like poop. God loves us and wants a relationship with us, but if we get our poopy selves near Him (even if it’s just a teeny, tiny little piece of our poopy self) we contaminate Him and His holiness. But since He loves us, He came up with a plan—and that plan is Jesus. Jesus died on the cross and washed all our poop away. That way we can come to God clean—not by our works but by the blood of Christ. The only thing we have to do is accept his sacrifice. If in our hearts we truly accept his sacrifice (by grace through faith), we will devote our lives to following him.
The Role of Poop in the Protestant Reformation

To be noted poop played an important role in the Protestant Reformation. Martin Luther had significant IBS and constipation problems. In fact, it is thought that he came to his 95 thesis while sitting on the toilet. According to my memory (which may be erroneous as I can only partially verify it), Martin Luther was severely constipated at the Diet of Worms (a convening at the location of Worms not an actual diet). He was in so much pain that he didn’t care if he lived or died. This convening is where he took his stand against Rome and stated:
“My conscience is captive to the word of God. To go against conscience is neither right nor safe. I therefore cannot, and I will not recant! Here I stand. I can do no other.”
Even if I misremembered about the actual Diet of Worms his bowel problems did influence his behavior!
Potty-Mouthed Martin Luther Quotes

The saintly (or sinner) Martin Luther had quite a potty mouth. (Note: I’m not sanctioning a potty-mouth as I think it goes against other verses in Scripture, but God uses sinners including Martin Luther despite their sins.) Here are a few samples of his potty-mouth quotes:
“Almost every night when I wake up the devil is there and wants to dispute with me. I have come to this conclusion: When the argument that the Christian is without the law and above the law doesn’t help, I instantly chase him away with a fart.” (Martin Luther, Table Talk, 469)
and
“’I maintain that God is just as busy annihilating as creating.’ This he [Martin Luther] said when there was mention of excrement, and he added, “I marvel that man hasn’t long since defecated the whole world full, up to the sky,’ etc.” (Martin Luther, Table Talk 1259)
and
“I’m fed up with the world, and it is fed up with me. I’m quite content with that. The world thinks that if it is only rid of me everything will be fine, and it will accomplish this. After all, it’s as I’ve often said: I’m like a ripe stool and the world’s like a gigantic anus, and so we’re about to let go of each other.” (Martin Luther, Table Talk, 5537).
Application

Go and share the Gospel with your family and friends. If you get stuck, don’t forget to use the analogy of poop to help them understand their sin. If Martin Luther, the leader of the Protestant Reformation, can talk about poop, so can you! Now I need to practice what I preach and look for opportunities to share as well. Please pray for me!
Ladder Learns to Pray

I’ve written a prayer book for young boys. Don’t worry there is no potty humor in this one—only trucks. (Although, I can’t say the same thing for your preschooler’s mouth 😂) The title of the book is Ladder Learns to Pray: And Other Bedtime Prayers. Its purpose is to help parents teach their young boys (and girls) how to pray. Each prayer also correlates to positive character traits that you want to instill in your child. The book should be available Spring 2026! Join our pre-order list today and get 20% off the list price. (Note: There is no financial obligation at this time.)
