Pursuing God in A Relativistic Culture: Bible Studies on Judges
After the death of Joshua, the people of Israel had no leader. Therefore, everyone did “right in their own eyes.” Doesn’t that sound like our society today—where every individual comes up with their own “truth” instead of listening to God’s TRUTH? Some churches still hold that Scripture is infallible, but many churches have discarded God’s Word as truth creating their own truth instead. But this isn’t a new trend in America. This same thing has been going on throughout history. That’s why it’s the perfect time to study the book of Judges. Each story in the book of Judges follows the same pattern. The people turn towards their own truth and away from God. Because of their sin, the people fall into judgment. The people cry out, and God sends a judge to deliver them. They are saved until their leader passes away and then the cycle continues once again. We need to learn from the Israelites, but we don’t need to follow that same pattern because we have the Holy Spirit. Summary of my Discipleship Curriculum
Judges is the fourth book included as part of my FREE disciplehip curriculum. The collective studies provide an overview of the Bible tying Old Testament stories to New Testament concepts. It is perfect for the seeker and new believer. However, the studies go deep enough even for a seasoned Bible reader as I’ve included a lot of great nuggets that I’ve learned over the years! They can be used one-on-one or in small groups or for individual study.
You can jump in at any study, but if you want to start at the beginning check on my Genesis and Exodus studies. If you want fun topical studies, check out my study on the Passover and the Tabernacle. If you are a seeker or new Christian, I would definitely recommend starting in Genesis.
Homework (optional)
The homework portions are NOT required. They were written as a supplement for an enthusiastic student I had. They focus on memorization, but you don’t have to memorize the passage. Instead you could just mediate on the passage and complete the reflection questions. This will help you stay in the Word all week long. The homework works very well as a personal devotion or could be used to guide your Scripture journaling.

Overview of the Judges Study
#1 Judges 2 on Deborah
Learn about Deborah, the only female judge, as she advises Israel’s army. Then study her worshipful response as she sings to the Lord.
Homework: Proverbs 31: 29-31
Study what it looks like to be a woman of valor as you review Proverbs 31 and look at the Hebrew word chavil.
#2 Judges 6 on Gideon
The story of Gideon highlights how God can empower weak people to carry out His will.
Homework: Romans 12: 1-2
This 3-day lesson explores what it means to be to offer ourselves as a living sacrifice. (Note: This homework is 3-days long instead of the typical 5 days.)
#3 Judges 8 on Abimelek and Jephthath
This lesson explores how Abimelek, Gideon’s son from a concubine, took power in Israel away from Gideon’s legitimate heir. Then it goes on to explore the foolish oath of Jephthath, and why it’s important not to promise foolish things. This is a long lesson and can be split into two days.
Note: There is no homework for this lesson.
#4 Judges 13 and Samson
Samson (aka Sampson) lived a life continually pursuing the sins of his flesh, but God still used him despite of his weaknesses because God is faithful.
Homework: 2 Corinthians 12: 9-10
This 3-day lesson or devotional focuses on how God uses us despite our weaknesses. (Note: This homework is 3-days long instead of the typical 5 days.)
#5 Judges 17
The last study in Judges explores what happens when everyone does as they see fit and the resulting depravity of those choices.
Note: There is no homework for this lesson.
Conclusion
Our emphasis on individualism has made us susceptible to the sins of Israel in the time of Judges—especially as the majority of Americans have left the church. Therefore, this is an extremely relevant study for our day and age as we pursue God’s truth in our lives.
