In my post How to Memorize the Bible at Any Age, I argued that it’s easier for adults to memorize Scripture if they spend time meditating and studying the passage. This allows for more neural connections to form, and therefore the Scripture passage has more “hooks” to connect to previous memories and knowledge.

Whereas young children are able to memorize things quickly because they have less stuff cluttering our brains. As we age, we have more memories; therefore, in order to add new memories, we need to make connections. To help with this, I’ve been creating Memory Devotionals which are 7-day devotionals that each focus on a Scripture passage. They also guide you in memorizing the Scripture passage in small chunks, hooking each successive chunk onto the previous chunk. In How to Memorize the Bible at Any Age, post I included access to a Memory Devotional on John 1: 1-5. This post will feature aMemory Devotional focusing on Psalm 8: 3-9. (Note: This Memory Devotional complements my free Bible Study on Genesis 2.) Psalm 8: 3-9, NIV

“When I consider your heavens,
    the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars,
which you have set in place,
what is mankind that you are mindful of them,
human beings that you care for them?

You have made them a little lower than the angels
and crowned them with glory and honor.
You made them rulers over the works of your hands;
you put everything under their feet:
all flocks and herds,
and the animals of the wild,
the birds in the sky,
and the fish in the sea,
all that swim the paths of the seas.

Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!”

The devotional, like all the Memory Devotionals I’m writing, starts with the Notice and Wonder routine. (Read more about the Notice and Wonder Routine in Notice and Wondering Routine: Unleash the Power of Observation and How to Improve Your Understanding of the Bible Using the Notice and Wonder Technique posts.) On Day 2 of the devotional, you will reflect on what it means to consider what God has made. Then the next day it has you delve into the significance of the four Hebrew words for “man”. Since Psalm 8 is quoted in the book of Hebrews, on Day 4 you will study the Psalm from the perspective of book of Hebrews. On the following day, you will connect Psalm 8 to the role of mankind in the world and to the image of God. (For more information on the image of God see my posts Reflecting God’s Image—Part 1: Insights from Scripture and Reflection Questions and Reflecting God’s Image—Part 2: An Infinitely-Faceted Diamond). On Day 6 you will reflect on the significance of the name of God. Finally, on the last day you will have a chance to review the verses and apply what you’ve learned.

Ladder Learns to Pray: Spring 2026

A promotional image featuring the text '20% Off!' superimposed over a blurred background of a fire truck and its equipment.

Are you looking for a way to disciple your young son or grandson? Are you having a difficult time finding Christian resources that target young boys? If so, I have the perfect book for you: Ladder Learns to Pray and other Bedtime Prayers!

Many of the Christian resources I found for young children had cute little kids and cuddly animals. This was not appealing at all to my son; he wanted trucks and wheel and trains! So, I scoured Amazon looking for Christian books aimed at young boys, but I couldn’t find anything. Therefore, I decided to write my own. It should be available Spring 2026. If you join my pre-order list today, you will receive a coupon for 20% off of list price. (Note: There is NO financial obligation at this time!)
