Death by Meetings: An Original Poem for Exhausted Educators

For all you educators who can’t get any work done because you are stuck in too many meetings! I wrote this during a stressful time while teaching.
Death by Meetings
by Anna Jedick Cannelongo
I was alive
Happy-free
Until a meeting came to me.
It was a pain
Slight—at first,
I didn’t know it could get worse.
A little here,
A little there,
Soon there were meetings everywhere.
We met to talk.
We met to plan.
We met to decide what to ban.
We met in his room.
We met in mine.
We even met during lunch time.
We met to meet—
Once or twice,
Though it was not so very nice.
We met to gossip
And complain.
It was starting to become lame.
The pain got worse.
That it sure did.
But naught we knew to do to rid.
The pain increased,
And slowly too,
Not just in me but also you.
Work was growing,
As time got less.
My this is becoming such a mess.
Reports to grade.
Parents to call.
Who can ever have time for it all?
With each new task
On every day,
When will it ever go away?
The head ached.
The stomach too.
There were lots we’re starting to rue.
The pain increased,
Too much to bear,
Yet no one even seemed to care.
“Meetings are good.”
“Just wait and see.”
Then they just laughed and cried “hee, hee.”
One by one people were starting to go.
Some dying fast.
Some dying slow.
The meetings continued,
Just as before,
Though none was left to walk through the door.
Disclaimer: I don't think meetings are bad or evil; usually, they are necessary. This is supposed to be a humorous piece that exaggerates a situation capturing the exhaustion of teacher who just can't seem to get things done because he/she is too busy doing other things.
